Ellen Stewart (born November 7, 1918 Alexandria, Louisiana), is an American theater director and producer and the founder of La MaMa, E.T.C. (Experimental Theatre Club).

Biography

After many years working in New York as a fashion designer, in the early 1960s she created probably the most successful Off-Off-Broadway theatrical company. In the next decades she became famous in the entire world, writing and directing an incredible number of pieces, exclusively based on music and dance, with international artists. Many famous actors, directors and playwrights started their careers in La MaMa, E.T.C., like Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Harvey Keitel, Danny DeVito, Diane Lane, Billy Crystal, Patti Smith, Nick Nolte, Sam Shepard, Andrei Şerban and Lanford Wilson.
In 2007 she was awarded the Praemium Imperiale in the field of Film and Theater.
